He coordinates the activities of the Health ministry and ensures that the ministry lives up to its duties and responsibilities.

The Minister of Health in Nigeria currently is Dr. Osagie Ehanire.

He became the Federal Minister of Health in November 2019. He is currently assisted by Hon. Joseph Ekumankama, who is the Minister of State for Health.

7 Things To Note About The Minister of Health in Nigeria

1) Dr. Osagie Ehanire was born on 4th November 1946, in Warri, Delta State.

This makes him 76 years as at 4th November 2022.

2) He became the Federal Minister of Health in Nigeria in November 2019.

Prior to becoming Minister of Health in November 2019, Dr. Ehanire had been the Minister of State for Health from November 2015 to May 2019. This was when Dr. Isaac Adewole was the Nigerian Minister of Health.

3) He had his secondary school education at Government College, Ibadan.


Dr. Ehanire obtained his West African School School Certificate after completing his studies in Government College, Ibadan.

4) He had his medical and postgraduate trainings mostly outside Nigeria

After obtaining his West African School Certificate, Dr. Osagie Ehanire went to study Medicine at the University of Munich in Germany. He obtained his Medical degree in 1976.

He also obtained a Post Graduate Diploma in Anaesthetics from the Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin, Ireland.

He then went ahead to bag a certificate in General Surgery and Orthopaedic Trauma Surgery.

5) He returned to Nigeria in 1982 and first worked at University of Benin Teaching hospital. He subsequently obtained his fellowship of the West African College of Surgeons (FWACS) in 1984

6) He has played an active part in Nigerian politics

Dr. Ehanire was a delegate of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), which gave rise to the All Progressive Congress (APC).

He was the Edo State Coordinator of the Buhari Support Organisation. So, he played an active role in drumming up support for Muhammadu Buhari prior to his election as Nigeria’s President in 2015.

He is a trustee of the TY Danjuma Foundation.

Dr. Ehanire was appointed a Founding Trustee of the Foundation in 2009. He held this position till 2021.

He also worked at the Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria as a Divisional Surgeon at the Company Hospital in Warri, Delta State, Nigeria.

He also worked as a Private Consultant Trauma Surgeon.

Dr. Ehanire is also co-chair of the Africa CDC- Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The Minister of Health is appointed to head and take charge of the Ministry of health in Nigeria.

The Ministry of Health in Nigeria is responsible for turning up and implementing policies which are geared towards improving the health status of Nigerians.

How Is A Minister Of Health Appointed?


The nomination of the Health Minister, as is the case with other Ministers, is sent to the National Assembly by the President.

The National Assembly then screens the nominees, including having a screening where they are asked questions.

After going through this processs, the National Assembly then okays (or disapproves of) the nomination. The candidate can then be appointed as the Minister.

How Long Does The Minister Of Health Stay In Office?


We should note that the Minister of Health is not a permanent civil service job. It is more like a political appointment by the government in power at any given time.

There is also no provision in the Nigerian laws stating how long a Minister should stay in office.

A Minister can be removed or can resign and be subsequently be replaced.
